Rep. Jeff Olsommer (R-Pike/Wayne) issued a statement following his “no” vote on an education funding bill, expressing concerns over the use of students in political debates and the lack of accountability for the additional funding.

“Year after year, it seems our students are used as political pawns in the education funding debate. I think the taxpayers and students deserve better,” Olsommer stated.

He referenced a Commonwealth Court decision that found Pennsylvania’s public school funding system unconstitutional but criticized the new bill for not providing metrics to measure improvements in student performance. “It’s as if we are signing a blank check and expecting nothing in return for our investment,” he said.

Olsommer emphasized his support for public education while advocating for a more tailored approach to funding. “I support public education and I support the public school system; however, the funding conversation must address that education is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and we need to keep an open mind on solutions, and choices, that will benefit the future successes of our children.”
