May 28 Marker Dedication Honors Gen. Lyman Lemnitzer in Honesdale

Document

Wayne County issued the following announcement on May 9.

The Lackawanna Historical Society has joined with Wayne County to dedicate a state historical marker in honor of General Lyman L. Lemnitzer on May 28th at 1 pm.

General Lemnitzer was born and raised in Honesdale, and is internationally recognized for his many accomplishments in an Army career that spanned more than five decades.  His full biography has been attached to the end of this release.

On May 28 at 1 pm, the Lackawanna Historical Society, in partnership with the Pennsylvania  Historical and Museum Commission, Honesdale National Bank, the Borough of Honesdale, the Valley of Scranton Masons, and Wayne County Historical Society will unveil the new state marker near the Lemnitzer family homestead at 15th and Main Street in Honesdale.

Scheduled speakers include Honesdale Council President James Hamill, PHMC Commissioner Robert Savakinus, General Lemnitzer’s grandson William Lemnitzer, Honesdale National Bank Trust Department VP Charles Curtin and Lemnitzer living historian Stan Pratt.

The Lackawanna Historical Society nominated the marker last year at the request of LHS member Ray Pilch, an avid fan of the general who first learned about his local ties when working for the Honesdale National Bank. Word of its approval came last Spring.

With input from Pilch, the groups decided to schedule the Memorial Day weekend dedication to allow Gen. Lemnitzer’s family time to plan and attend the program. Three of the general’s grandsons will be in attendance including William and Robert both from Virginia, and Michael from Texas. They are excited to see their grandfather honored and look forward to visiting his hometown.

A special Stourbridge Line Lemnitzer LTD excursion will also be offered on the 28th to coincide with the dedication. For details about the excursion, contact Jeffrey Hiller, 570-470-2697 or email jhiller@thestourbridgeline.net

Contact the Lackawanna Historical Society for more information or to make a reservation for these programs at 570-344-3841 or email lackawannahistory@gmail.com.
