Commissioners Mark Parkinson's Research Awareness Month

Saint John the Evangelist Parish Honesdale issued  the following announcement on May 25.

The Wayne County Commissioners welcomed Roland Grote to help them mark Parkinson's Research Awareness Month in May and promote the seventh annual Pocono Fox Trot, hosted by the Tri-State Parkinson's Project, set for Saturday, June 18, rain or shine.

Parkinson's disease is a degenerative neurological disease with no cure and no way to stop the progression of the disease, and medications can only may the symptoms easier to live with. Grote says the community continues to raise awareness of the disease, remove some of the stigma associated with Parkinson's Disease, and to provide information, resources and support  for patients and their caregivers.

As the Pocono FoxTrot event began showcasing the growing number of resources available to those living with Parkinson's Disease, activists and advocates formed a non-profit organization that has been reaching out to providers, created a website to offer information and produced brochures for doctors and medical facilities to share with newly diagnosed patients.

The annual event benefits the Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Tri-State Parkinson's Project and has raised more than $207,000 to date.

This year's theme, "Back to the Future, Where Parkinson's Doesn't Exist," will feature a 5K run, a one-mile community walk and a Resource Fair at the Ann Street Park in Milford on Saturday, June 18. Registration begins at 8:30 am, with opening ceremonies at 9:45 and the 5K kickoff at 10 am. Special guests for the event will be members of the DeLorean Mid-Atlantic Car Club.

Pre-registration is required by visiting www.PoconoFoxTrot5K.org and the cost is $35.
